We follow the winding mountain path down through Syange and along the river for some distance. The trail then climbs sharply and the path is cut into the sheer cliff-face some 200-300m above the riverbed. After going past Chame, trekkers find a noticeable change in both landscape and people as we can see most of the houses are built in stone instead of mud. Then, the landscape becomes drier as Pisang village is approached. The location of the village is remarkable as it lies just in front of ancient sea bed. The village has a Tibetan feel due to the presence of numerous Buddhist prayer flags and long lines of prayer wheels. From the Pisang Gompa. Pisang is the view point of various mountains such as Mt. Annapurna II (7937m) Pisang peak (6091m) and Lamjung (6932m)

This trail guarantees excellent views of the beautiful landscape and the mighty mountains including Annapurna and Pisang. We begin to notice a contrast in the landscape and vegetation from today. The cold and dry climate also creates a much harsher environment. Our short visit to Barge monastery, the largest monastery in the entire district of Manang will be memorable. Overnight at Manang.

Our final day’s trekking sees us passing through the settlements of Jharkot (3550m), Khingar (3200m) and Kagbeni (2800m), at the confluence of the Jhong Khola and the Kali Gandaki. Kagbeni is filled with character, its narrow alleyways and tightly packed houses affording it an atmosphere of timeless charm. To the north of here begins the trail into Mustang, on the borders of Tibet and the Central Asian Plateau. You will go through the green oasis that is Kagbeni (2,800m), which stands out in stark contrast to the surrounding moonscape. Coming out of Kagbeni you follow the broad rugged course of the Kali Gandakiriver where thankfully the terrain is now quite flat. Jomsom is the region’s administrative headquarters and its bustling urgency will doubtless come as something of shock after our days in the remote mountains. Home to the Thakalis people and from here we can gaze up towards the Nilgiri and Dhaulagiri ranges and across the barren mountains of the Kali Gandaki Valley. A fitting end to a truly unforgettable trek.
